Design System Lead
The Huntington UX team is seeking a passionate and experienced Design System leader with a strong focus on accessibility to join our team of design thinkers. In this role, you will lead the continued creation and maintenance of our design system, ensuring it meets the highest standards of accessibility. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to create a cohesive and inclusive design language that enhances the user experience for all.
A key focus of this role will be leading and evangelizing our Huntington Digital Design System to grow and maintain the system and oversee continuous updates to our digital component libraries. You will need to have a passion for visual standardization to ensure consistent use of design components across our digital experiences. Additionally, this role will be expected to help drive standardization of our use of Figma for Designers and Developers (Dev Mode) to support the Design System effort.
In this role, you will play a critical, and exciting, role in designing solutions that are used daily by customers, and you’ll have an opportunity to help them manage a critical part of their lives, their financial well-being.
Overview
In this role, you will:
- Lead the continued creation, implementation, and maintenance of our Design System with a strong emphasis on accessibility. You will be partnering with an existing team of Designers and Developers already working in this space.
- Consult with UX Designers to ensure alignment and consistency of all front-end UI elements.
- Have an intimate knowledge of the Design System and its rules and standards, to be able to consult on projects with other UX Designers to help guide proper implementation of the design system for their respective projects.
- Maintain component libraries and Design System documentation, guidelines, and best practices for accessible design.
- Evangelize and grow awareness of our Design System inside and outside the UX team and partner with development teams and architects to increase adoption.
- Collaborate/consult with our IT partners and build relationships and trust to ensure alignment around Design System components between UX team and IT teams.
- Identify process enhancement opportunities for front-end work products and ensure the relationship with IT delivery teams is strong.
- Evaluate our current workflow/processes and define processes and governance guidelines where necessary, especially as it relates to standardization around use of Figma for Designers and Developers (Dev Mode). This can include documentation of the process and training for team members.
- Collaborate with designers, developers, and product managers to ensure accessibility is integrated into all stages of the design and development process.
- Provide training and support to team members on accessibility standards and practices.
- Advocate for accessibility and inclusive design within the organization.
- Collaborate/consult with our Huntington Web Accessibility Group on accessibility audits and usability testing to identify and address accessibility issues.
- Stay up to date with the latest accessibility standards, guidelines, and best practices (e.g., WCAG, ARIA).
- Coordinate discussions with IT partners regarding prototyping and front-end approach.
- Collaborate with UX teammates (UI designers, UX Researchers, Font-end UI Developers, Content Writers), business/product managers, IT teams, brand managers, analytics teams and leadership.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Visual or Graphic Design, Digital Media, Human-Computer Interaction
- Minimum 5 years of experience in the field of digital experience design
Preferred Qualifications:
- 5+ years of experience in design system management, with a strong focus on accessibility.
- Deep understanding of accessibility standards and guidelines (e.g., WCAG, ARIA).
- Expert knowledge in design tools, specifically Figma.
- Experience with front-end development technologies (e.g., HTML, CSS, JavaScript) is a plus.
- Expert knowledge of the Material Design Components and MUI.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
- Passion for creating inclusive and accessible digital experiences.
- Strong organization, facilitation, collaboration and problem-solving skills
- Passion for playing the following roles: Coach, guide, mentor, optimist
- Balanced understanding of specialized UX skillsets (experience strategy, design research & usability, interaction and visual design, content strategy, front-end UI development)
- Knowledge of latest trends and UI conventions in the digital space
- Comfort building relationships at all levels of the organization and with presenting to senior leaders
- Strong understanding of the user-centered design process
- Experience with responsive web design, mobile first approach and nuances between native app platforms
- Experience working with enterprise scale brands
- Experience navigating from design into delivery within enterprise IT environments, both agile and waterfall
- Ability to work on multiple projects concurrently, demonstrating a mature ability to prioritize and manage time
